there is a class/form horse in every race and conflict to one degree or another in 95% of them. That race was a bit more open to a bet than some of the other races that I looked at in detail

I am sure you will agree that not all odds on shots are good things.

well i thought that was worth opposing at the odds i took.

Barney - If the horse that beat Van Nistelrooy last time in Ireland was more exposed rather than just a one run one win customer, then I would have made VN as downturning it's form last time. As it happens, he was beaten on saturday by the 2nd best.

Crock - The ratings given were correct and helped highlight a dodgy fc fav. For info I use the last 6 runs for SFs and the other rating is based on the last 3 runs, but compiled in a different way to it's source. This is done very quickly via the PC, but the formula/guidelines are a bit complex. As VDW said, it is interesting to note that various ratings don't always agree. The two races today went to those figuring highly on one or more of the ratings. Just out of interest here are the ratings for the 2 horse race at Bath.

Calcutta.........15*......123.....132*.....87
Wannabe Around...22(16?)..153*....126......93*

Obviously I'm not going to explain how the recompiled handicap rating is arrived at, but the usual format works fine also, but placing more emphasis on class/form study.

I'll try and post some ratings for most racing days where time permits as it is useful to see where the conflicts are arising.

A while ago you commented briefly on Nomadic Way, winner of the 1988 Cesarewitch.

At the time, I hadn't studied that race, but have done so today and entirely agree with you. Not only was Nomadic Way the class/form horse, as far as I'm concerned he was the only form horse in the first six of the (Life's) forecast, and of course was the most consistent horse in the field.

I don't know whether you checked the ability ratings of the rest of the field, which is time consuming without access to the form in the Life. But you may be interested to know that there were only three other horses with comparable or higher ability ratings: Clifton Chapel (93), Waafi (77) and Janiski (62) - compared to Nomadic Way's 65.

Of the three, two could quickly be discarded as out of form (Waafi) or having markedly inferior recent form to NW (Janiski). Clifton Chapel needs consideration, having had two runs in Group class prior to contesting the Cesarewitch, but overall its form was not impressive.

All in all I have to say I can't remember exploring a less problematic 24 runner handicap. If by any chance this year's proves equally straightforward it truly will be Christmas come early.

I have the list drawn up,there were quite a few selections. What I propose to do is start a thread,on vdw site, called vdw selections September, and so on for October etc.I would prefer if any comments were made on this thread, and keep the other one just for the list.

I was just going to list them in date order, with names beside the selection, and whether it won or lost.I don't feel that there is need for course or race time, what do others think.

I would like selections to be vdw inspired, and hunches thoughts etc will not be included, neither will after race selections. If a member states a selection without analysis, that is fine,as post race analysis can be carried out.

I hope to put up the list tomorrow night,I would like to hear any suggestions/alterations to it before I put it up.

Guest,

Thanks for that, illuminating as always!!

Fulham,

i have said in the past that they really were "the golden years". With the knowledge that a lot of punters and the racing press have today that would be odds on (in my opinion).AS to the other ability ratings of the other horses you mention I did not no back that far, there was no need, the more I look the more I find they are just pointers and not the be all and end all as with the other pointers. All have one or the other but mostly placement and class in comparison.Guest has tried to show that as well but its a sticky wicket for me at the moment and its sometimes far to easy to wait for the easy ones than work out all the runners and why they are here.

enough waffle

pipedreamer,

sounds good to me! although i think its a bit harsh to back track when people are trying to draw attention to certain aspects of VDW and not necesarily give winners (with some selections).

That is always assuming that people have a real good look at the races in question of course.

Re my posting of 13 Sept, it is now obvious what Robandela's trainer was up to. All we need to do now is spot it before the race is run! Read the form, look how he was ridden, and see what conclusion you come to. It would seem that Mr AT is taking the p*** again.

PIPEDREAMER
Whatever way you present it is fine in my book, it is good of you to put the the time and effort in anyway; but as you intend to keep it to VDW related selections anyway, why not do it on this thread. Not all of us are computer literate enough to find our way in the dark!
