Hi Pipedreamer,

As you probably know I backed Colliers. I saw the race on TV and it was the strangest race I watched for a long time!

Very much like the old Point to Points and flappers, I thought.

Our horse was a good runner but a terrible jumper ( unless it was the jockeyship at fault).

I didn't relax till he was ten yards past the line! But he did it, so all is well.

Thank you. Swish, for some very useful and interesting points.

We'll need to watch how BlackCat's thread goes. He has a very good strike rate which I think is essential for regular backing of shorties.

Yes, I'd have to agree that Mtoto knows a lot about the racing game, as do many on Gummy.

It's a great education all in all!

Thanks again.

Re Best Mate etc:

Best Mates bettter form has always been over a stiff 3m+, and he has shown on numerous occasions that he is inconvenienced by less; yet he remains unbeaten over a sufficient test.
Despite his fto form figures, and though he has always been fit to run on his re-appearance, he has never, IMO, been fit to run for his life fto.
All of Sir Rembrandt's recent form indicates that he needs a stiffer test than Friday's at the top level. Even in his finest hour he didn't get in to the race until the dying strides of a gruelling 3.25 miles. Whatever the intentions with this horse, Friday's race wasn't high on his list of priorities.
All of Seebald's form has been over shorter trips, but the married man's pace almost enabled him to nick this.
All in all, a classic case of being wary of high class conditions races, exactly as VDW suggested.
Those who write him off should maybe have a rethink!

Johnd,

A good post, I dont think that anyone has written him off, more like that its a case of he would have to be watched before he could be supported in the cup race, from a CVDW point of view. Another interesting point is the one you raise about the "married mans pace". JIB appears to use the race time as an indicator of a below par performance and lack of race fitness. It appeared to me that the early part of the race was pedestrian but who knows what the pace was like in the later stages? If more information was availble regarding the last two or three furlongs of the race, and of course we had other similar data for his past performances, it could in fact turn out to be a remarkable performance against a fast horse showing him to be in the form of his life. We will never know!
Unless you get the old stop watch out on the DVD recording that is!

Apologies for not making myself clear.
The last line was intended for those who have written off VDW, not Best Mate.

You gotta eat that - if you want to try and persuade "Lee" to give you a few "hints and tips" Big Grin

Lee - I think tho', has paid a lot of cash, to gain insight into the "Art of Succesfull Betting" and has made considerable "Progress" - on the subject, and he - is not about to "Give it Away" on the basis of a few "**s*licking" postings Razz

Sean/Pkboy,

All the stopwatch does is record the time the race was run in. For instance, handicappers as opposed to pattern class horses hold many course records at the different distances, which is significant. However, put the handicapper in a pattern class race and on most occasions it will be found wanting. Of course, that is not to say that the speed figure is useless, just not the be all and end all.

TC,

You're close, but miles away!

Lee,

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately your reply is not a response to the question I asked and to which seanrua thought you had the answer. Obviously his assumption was unfounded.
