TC,

Thanks for the kind words. However, I can't claim the ratings as my own - wish that I could.

You say the 65.3% achieved from the 3 most consistent was disappointing, but would you consider 72% also disappointing. Because that is the maximum that can be achieved, in the long term, in non hcaps. In hcaps it is 54%. The minimum that will be achieved is 26.5% in non hcaps and 22.5% in hcaps. Figures are rounded down to the nearest 0.5% and taken from a 5 year survey.

Barney: If you employ that procedure please stick up the selections, other people are freely offering selections arrived at by other procedures (even if they dont ordinarily employ such procedures).
Boozer: Then why consider fields of more than six runners?

Just the one 3lb penalty today - Chester 4.00 High Action.

The ratings I use no negatives, both of the other runners had multiple negatives - I know it's after, but I did put 3lb up before. Also have a copy of the ratings - they don't change and obviously have to be before.

Value would be 6/5, won 5/4.

As I have said before, I'm still learning so no money - perhaps I should start now.

I find it hard to find races with a decent looking bet in as it is

To only use 6 runner races or less would severly restrict anybodys operation

One of VDW's
piece of reasoning I can relate to is seeing if there is a winner in the race and not trying to find the winner of the race

Barney,
A good post, item 1 ,with reference to the three best rated. What criteria are you using or referring to,by that statement?or put it another way,are you rating them first, before you apply the consistency ratings?

Boozer: Yes, I know how you feel.

I had a look at the two races from the 30th using the initial part of the full method. I wrote the details of each horse then ringed the top three in each catagory (other than betting forecast) and including all in the case of ties. The catagories used were days since last run, betting forecast, consistency rating, ability rating, Postmark and Topspeed. In the 2:05 the only horse ringed in all catagories was Persian Majesty, the winner, Alkaased, was top on both ability and consistency but didn't make the Postmark cut. In the 2:40 Nyramba ringed in four of the six catagories did best but could hardly be considered to have had "everything lining up". The winner Phantom Wind was only ringed in the days since. Any questions about the details are welcome.

Boozer the way I go about selecting the one from the three probables, from whatever method employed to get three probables is to pick the horse(if any)which in the nearest conditions to todays race(track-galloping or undulating, stiff or easy finish & going & class of race ect)stays on strongly/quickens/ran on well. This does tend to isolate the winner as well as any other method IMO.Best of luck

Sorry about the delayed reply. Been away since Sunday.
Three quotes from VDW which span most of his work:

"If you fail to achieve a minimum of 80% success, evaluate your reading of form".
"To confirm what the figures say, it is necessary to study the form of all concerned......."
"If you go into hospital and they ask you your blood group, tell them it is the form book".
There are numerous quotes, with endless interpretations, but those 3 are clear enough to convince me where to look for the answers.

Barney
Oddly enough, I can follow your logic, and if it is applied along with Lee's interpretation, I have little doubt it would improve the initial selection process.
However, having taken another look at the Goodwood and Royal Ascot results, there is room for doubt.
I will go through the results more thoroughly over the next few days, in the meantime, why not take up Epi's invitation and post some up.

Tc
I am probably stating the obvious, but the lifetime form on RP online will quickly give you the lifetime best s/f and RPR for any runner.
If you read my answer to Boozer re the form book, the middle quote not only tells where to look, but also how to look at it.

johnd - I have never in my life - looked at a form book - I wouldn't know where to start !!

What is form ???

Confused Confused
Confused

form - to my mind - is what a horse has achieved.

class - is the level at which it did it !

-

Both elements can be determined from the RP - what additional help is the form book ??

as I say , I have never read one, and every time I have picked one up, I have put it down again baffled as to why I should spend a lot of money on it- ????

I am sure you can make a positive contribution toward my dilema !

I'm very happy that this thread is active again however there are some questions i need answering.

If VDW wanted to help the punter why was he so criptic?

If Vdw was active today wouldn't he be making a fortune from laying?

Yes an open challenge would be v interesting
If I may be so bold to make a suggestion, how about you both accepting each others bets at SP? With an agreed upper limit to your stakes so as to keep it real?
Even if one is getting clobbered he can still lay his opponents bets off providing there is a reasonable deadline for their posting.

Greg,

I'm am interested in no challange that is worth nothing to me.

Ablility to pick winners and make a profit shouldn't matter to anyone but oneself.

If it is my selections that you wish to see, then you can have them, but not for nothing, which is why I've asked you to email me. I'd email you but don't know your address.
