Theres a guy who works down my local chip shop who swears he's VDW, And in the other local chip shop there is a guy who swears he's Elvis, both have got a German accent. Now i know Elvis spent some time in Germany iv'e seen the films, and a Dutch man can sound similar to a German, so i have know reason to disbeleive them. I asked Elvis to sing a song,he sung hound dog. I asked VDW for a tip he said never wipe your ar** with broken glass. I was most dissapointed with he's answer, so i said to VDW, you know what your problem is pal ,you've got a chip on your shoulder. VDW told me if i did not get out of his chip shop he would shove a sausage in batter right were the sun does'nt shine. So i left without placing any orders.

A quick re-cap
Sean, Goodlife, and any other that missed it...
You obviously missed the thread put up by JIB on the original Gummy forum, titled something like "A time for great humility".
Here is a quick re-cap, played to the tune of Eastenders, given in terms that I am genuinely hoping will be taken in the spirit they are intended, which is to summarise the situation in as light-hearted and non-partisan a fashion as I can manage.
Here we go :
AlanB (who is also Fulham) says he has found and identified the writer of the letters penned under the name Che Van der Wheil. He is alive and well and living in Market Harborough. (Where else would he be living?)
Fulham has made know the findings of his research to a select few.
Included in the select few are JIB, Mtoto and Lee. And from what he wrote in the opening post in this thread, perhaps Gdubsuk also (who I wish would let us call him Marchwood, Stableform or at least something pronounceable).
JIB, Mtoto and Lee confirmed on the original Gummy forum that the AlanB findings were virtually indisputable. They are convinced as to the veracity of the evidence. (Veracity - big word for a little kitty cat).
Several contributors have expressed disatisfaction with the evidence only being give to a few. Amongst them is Johnd who is unconvinced, and he would like to see the evidence to be persuaded.
The person known as Van der Wheil is, according to AlanB, not living in the style to which we would expect to see if the claims made in the booklet were to be belived.
Johnd pointed out that not all millionaires live like kings. Some go out of their way not to stand out.
AlanB contacted VDW by letter, but was rebuffed.
I recon that's brought you roughly up to where I got to in the saga, but it sounds like a little more had occurred since.
I've probably got some of it skewed, but I'll be put straight, no doubt.

And finally, in those immortal words uttered by Woody in the movie Toy Story, "Play nice".

BC You should have entitled the above post SOAP .Do you remember that dreadful so called American comedy.

FFS!
So, in other words, the whole thing is complete and utter nonsense?
Wherein, even one of the greatest believers and exponents of vdw methodology, namely johnd, does NOT accept that this poor old pensioner, that the other officionados of the myth managed to track down to Market Harborough, is, indeed, the man.
Dear, oh, dear, oh dear!
At least old Swish admitted that he experimented with drugs! This nonsense can only be described as unbelievable. The ravings of madmen and lunatics, at a guess. Making money from racing is difficult enough, without wasting time and sanity on baseless, ridiculous, make-believe, that is surely well passed its sell-by date. But no, I forgot; the trade in the old booklets continues unabated. I can see why some are keen for the myth to live.
Cop onto yourselves, laddies; there's no fool, like an old fool.

Sean,
Calm down chap!!
In fairness to Johnd, he hasn't seen the material. So why should he take anyones word for it? And he has his personal (although in my view incorrect) reasons for not trusting the source.
And just because the man who penned the articles has (probably) been found, does that in itself make them any less vauable or worthless than they were before he was discovered?
You yourself have maintained he didn't ever exist.
Do you want to know what I think the main value of the VDW articles is? It is this:
They make you think.
And in thinking, we question, and grow, and develop, and research, and hopefully improve.
EC and JIB have put the VDW material in the armoury and have "moved on". So why do they come back to post on a VDW board? Perhaps because it is an arena that looks at so many facets of winner finding that they are able to question, grow, develop, research and improve.
Finally, you do seem fixated on the book-sellers. Only Browzers & Tony Peach make any money out of these pamphlets. The people here just want to explore their merits.

SEAN Ever watched the Davinci Code.Only the knights Templar know where the Holy Grail is hidden.Personally i still have yet to see a reasonable explanation as to why we can not see the letters / evidence to make up our own minds. Maybe if you can make racing pay or you put in plenty of hours of hard work reading the form books then you become worthy. What have i and others done not to be trusted. Im certainly not going to kick down vdw's door and demand he tells me how to find a winner thats for sure, however i maybe able to persuade vdw to open up a bit more who knows. If i could find out some more , could the privaleged few trust me to tell them what i now would know,or in the back of there minds would they think i was holding back.

Sean
I can understand your scepticism about either the identification of Van der Wheil or the various interpretations of his method. But I can't for the life of me understand your apparent view that in some sense the whole thing is to sell booklets. Van der Wheil wrote a small book nearly ten years after the bulk of his letters to the Sporting Chronicle Handicap Book, and Tony Peach has put together several booklets, again some years after the bulk of the letters. I find it difficult to believe that Van der Wheil's object in writing those letters and articles was to provide the basis for publications years later, or that either Van der Wheil or Tony Peach have made any significant money from the sales of their publications, which were very modestly priced. Van der Wheil's book had a cover price of £2.95, and after retailers and the publisher (Raceform) took their cuts, I'd be amazed if Van der Wheil made £1 a copy.

I havent read all there is to read about VDW and know little about finding winners. From what I have read on various forums it appears to me that at least some useful information has been gleaned by several posters. Whether or not he existed or backfitted his claims it appears to me that some have benefitted from the saga. How about a tipping competition

Have it your own way, fellas!
I don't enjoy seeing folk taken in by nonense, but it's a free world, they say. JIB has described the vdw bloke as a proven liar, but, let's just pretend that he was sound AND is still alive. It's more than likely that he'd be senile and unwell ( especially after all the ill-treatment in the POW camp) by now. However, if this is not the case, then why the fk doesn't he come forward and put us all straight? I mean, if a bribe were needed to make it worth his while, there are enough on here who'd welcome the chance to throw a few more bucks into the hat.
