WALTER HI
What is Johnd actually contributing, you have put up more winners then he , some at nice prices as well without having to twist your arm and you most certainly do not deliberaly go out of your way to make people think you no more than you really do about vdw.
I no it's not a tipping competition but Johnd is very cloak and dagger, and i think does not like to be wrong.

Im wrong most of the time but im not afraid of it i just get on with it and move on.

Ectoo has kindly put up on another thread his % table for winning favorites in there different grades, it does what it says on the tin as the expression goes it is straight forward. Unless i have missed somthing, has Johnd ever been that open. Just a little snipit would have been nice from Johnd, something that was clear cut and not cloak and dagger.

Walter,

Your arse contributes to the sewers.

That is not a motive for having its picture painted.

Thinking further about Trypod's comment about a pattern and your subsequent question to me, I am not of course sure that if what Trypod and I have separately observed is one and the same. I suspect from Trypod's post probably not.

You specifically said you were not asking me to state the pattern I have observed, but hopefully to take discussion a bit further forward I would offer the following. If we take the strong Van der Wheil selections, ie those we have every reason for supposing he backed, normally:

if the class/form horse is going up in class, it won last time out;

if the class/form horse is dropping in class, normally he did not win last time out.

Not only is this rational (if a horse can't win a class X lto, why should he be able to win a class X+; on the other hand if he ran well in a class Y, he is potentially a candidate to win a class Y-), bearing it in mind forces one to think long and hard about any class/form horse that does not conform, ie there need to be compelling reasons to see it as a backable exception.

There are exceptions:

Celtic Pleasure was a class/form horse rising in class which Van der Wheil described as an "outstanding bet" and it came only second last time out.

Crown Matrimonial, Diamond Edge and Zilzal were class/form horses dropping in class which Van der Wheil described as "certainties" or "virtual certainties" and they had all won last time out,

and obviously the reasons one infers that Van der Wheil made them exceptions are significant in guiding one's current selections.

But in general Van der Wheil's strong bets had all won last time out if rising in class and had not won last time out if dropping in class, and simply following those rules of thumb would eliminate many of the losing selections posted on this forum over the years as Van der Wheil type selections.

VDW`s Prominent King was another who had finished 2nd lto and won next time out when going up in class. That one being his first example suggests there are important issue`s to be dealt with re - the form cycle of the horse & trainer placement.

Yes, thank you, George.

According to some studies reported in the "Which?" book on gambling several years back, it was concluded that (paraphrased)

" a lot of punters lose BECAUSE they IGNORE the OBVIOUS."

A lesson that sounds so simple, yet is, possibly, so hard to learn. Perhaps, it doesn't, after all, hinge on some mysterious "missing link" or old booklets, but is simply there in the results, all the time. Smile

On another, disbanded, forum, the bossman used to delight in producing figures that showed
WLTO
didn't do well NTO.

Sometimes I feel we may be misleading ourselves by dismissing these WLTOs. I mean, does any other sub-group of horses have a better SR , NTO? Wink

Sorry about all the initials; they're not something I like by nature, but they do save time.

Finally, regarding the obvious, I've started trialling some shortest-priced & most tipped selections ( yet again Smile)
Some dude on btfr forum reckons that these are an overlooked category which many folk give up on, because they don't win everytime. He reckons that, with perseverence and with finding BEST PRICE, these jollies can pay.
I'll post up the results of my trials later, even though this sort of thing is sure-bound to annoy Sir johnd even more. Wink
