Today's 400R is an interesting example of where exactly the importance of the trainer fits in when analysing form.
Dandy Nicholls, if not a law unto himself, is an example of a trainer who is capable of altering, bending, or even suspending aspects and effects of form.
If Valery Borzov was Mr Nicholls obvious contender, and a trier, only that trainer would risk letting Tajneed rip after 105 days off the course.
Les I hope you had the 12 stall ew!
Pd I think I have something of Lee's on my other computer, though I'm not sure if I have his email. However that machine has something wrong with the memory and keeps re-initiating itself every two or three minutes. I will take it to the workshop this week and will let you know as soon as I can.

Well done Les, hope you took the early prices? Either way, you should have a decent profit.

It seems to me that Gerald Delamare in the Racing Post is the closest tipster to VDW type selections, again today he had Paco Boy, he also had the forecast in the big Ripon sprint.I have noticed over the years he gives a lot of what I would consider VDW types.
JIB Thanks don't go to too much bother though,Lee might even look in at some stage.

if a race has an ability rating of 100 how far down are vdwrs prepared to go before saying this horse has not won in good enough company ie won a race of 30,50,,75 before running in the race rated 100,i know there are horses who win big races with poor ability ratings but does anyone use a rule of thumb

I have no idea how this will tabulate, but this is the field as set out in Betting The VDW Way. The order is form figures, ability rating*, consistency*, class & distance of last 3 runs, (latest run first).
1988 Mackeson - Class rating 221 Dist 2m4f Going-good
132P3-2 Bishops Yarn 40* 7* 36-2m5f 167-2m4f 37-2m4f
24U11-1 Jim Thorpe 52* 3* 29-2m 97-2m 65-2m
2U312-1 Pegwell Bay 40* 4* 57-2m4f 52-2m4f 78-2m4f
211331- Comeragh King 21 7* 32-2m4f 67-2m4f 146-2m4f
2P02-36 Gee-A -- 11* 73-3m 18-2m4f 20-2m5f
15P2-15 Welsh Oak -- 8 34-2m61 17-2m4f 73-2m4t
01313-4 The Argonaut -- 8 43-2m4f 32-2m6f 29-2m4f
11-121F Giolla Padraig 19 4* 47-2m41 31-2m41 20-2m41
22241-3 Smart Tar -- 8 57-2m4f 146-2m4f 40-2m41
331P-23 Warner for Leisure -- 6 143-2m 36-2m 137-2m
0251-33 Townley Stone 59* 7* 31-2m4f 47-2m4f 25-2m3f
64U652- Dudie -- 13 32-2m6f 75-3m1f 37-2m4f
163P-25 Ace of Spies -- 10 31-2m4f 47-2m4f 18-3m
Forecast SP: 3 Jim Thorpe, 7 Townley Stone. 8 GiolIa Padraig, Pegwell Bay, 10 Comeragh King, Smart Tar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He then goes on to analyse the class, and the last 3 runs, of each horse, which is too much for my computer skills but, as with Roushayd, the form is on RP online. Hope this helps.

There is no 'rule of thumb', (It isn't a system, ffs ) After finding the consistent horses, you need to firmly establish the class of each horse, the object being to identify the better horses in class order, and then evaluate their chances in today's race. Ability ratings are a guide - not an absolute essential.
