On the contrary, it has been explained quite clearly.

JohnD,

Are you really saying anyone who follows the instructions as set out in SIAO will make VDW (or horse racing) pay? Isn't it a fact if these instructions are followed the user wouldn't have found a large percentage of the early examples.

Only those that believe it hasn't tie themselves in knots.

Again I can't agree, in fact I think a lot of the knots come from thinking SIAO is the way forward. As I said before I think the waters were muddied, and this article is one of the biggest factors in this. Mr Peach says he asked VDW to write this article and I don't know if was intentional, but for me it certainly did the job. It suggested to people VDW could be made to work by applying a few simple rules. For those the knew/know it was never a simple set of rules they were then side tracked into finding ways of making the a/rating work, by making horses out of form, etc. when that wasn't what VDW had said. These are the folk who were tied in knots no one else.

I would go as far as to suggest anyone just starting to unravel the VDW methods should put a line through the article. Concentrate on the early examples, get to grips with the To-Agori-Mou example, and then read SB. Forget about any and everything Mr Peach was involved in or wrote. Remembering Mr Peach said VDW only wrote about s/f at his suggestion. This is rubbish (or VDW is a liar) when he said he had been using s/f as far back as 1967. I don't know for certain when Mr Peach started paying VDW for articles, but I personally treat most things after the introduction of the ability rating with a very large pinch of salt.

Be Lucky

Mtoto Johnd

As I said previously VDW combined everything he had wrote about, up to that time, in siao. This included the two methods he had illustrated earlier. The only other method he said he used up to that time was the one following a list of horses (the six for the National Hunt season). The two methods are the original consistent form method and the class form method, which can find the virtual racing certainty. In siao VDW primarily worked through the class form method. This is why siao and the early examples do not tie up.
The class form method involves evaluating the 4 horses with the highest ability rating, starting with the highest rated and working downwards in order of ability. Only the highest ability rated horse can qualify as a virtual racing certainty.
The consistent form method involves evaluating the 3 most consistent from the first 5/6 in the betting forecast, starting with the forecast favourite which MUST be one of the 3 and working upwards in order of forecast price.

Walter

Brilliant result. Absolutely chuffed, for you and your lad. Cheers

Mtoto/Garstonf

VDW introduced ability, and his formula, in only his 4th letter concerning the method as early as May, 1979, so it was hardly an afterthought, or a convenient invention at a later date..
In the same letter (L20) he also exhorted us to evaluate your reading of form after the preliminary mechanical procedure, exactly the same as he did in SIAO.
Consistent form is a guide as to where the winners are most likely to come from, as is the abilty rating. Although both are useful, neither stand alone without reading and understanding the form, so it is pointless suggesting earlier selections don't fit from the basis of not understanding how he read form.
They do fit, and quite simply, but the best way to find that out isn't to believe it's endlessly complicated, or to discard the bits you don't like.

Very well done, Walter!

I don't think I saw anyone at Chester who had backed it - bar the connections, perhaps.

What I did notice, when checking the RP later, was that it had the "best, best RPR).
Perhaps. this ties in wiuth the stuff about " class being permanent"?

In fact, RPR had quite a good day.

I didn't do well ( only one winner: Sail), but I did enjoy the event.

JohnD,

You are quite correct he did mention ability way back in 79, but it certainly didn't involve using an average of win prize money. In SIAO one thing he didn't mention was the formula, these are two of the reasons why this article is a waste of space. If you take the method of measuring ability mentioned in 79 it fits into the formula quite nicely, as it just says ability.

The consistent form method involves evaluating the 3 most consistent from the first 5/6 in the betting forecast, starting with the forecast favourite which MUST be one of the 3 and working upwards in order of forecast price.

Garstonf,

If I'm reading your post correctly you are saying the early examples are based on the consistent form method. If this is so how do Love From Verona, Son Of Love, and a few other who didn't register in the forecast fit? This about the forecast favourite having to be one of the lowest three for consistency also causes problems. There are some races where this doesn't fit. the race were Soaf was the selection being just one that springs to mind,

Be Lucky
