TOTY 2008 after January

One thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is that it's really tough to make a profit with a low strike rate; while the top half of the table managed ridiculous strike rates of 25% or more (Pat even exceeding 40%), the bottom four couldn't even manage 10%. Room for improvement methinks!

Not surprisingly, they also accounted for the longest losing streaks, with Oldtimer taking pride of place with 17 – don't worry, that will grow to several runs of over 20 before the year's out, though I am hoping to keep it below 50. In fact, of the upper echelon of the table, only Ginger has broached double figures (just!).

Pat leads the field in winning runs, currently being on the second run of 3 this year, though Michael, Delilah, Ginger and even Whisper have managed to find two in a row.

If January is anything to go by it looks as if Ginger is on for another 200+ winner year, while Pat should easily bring up a ton. The rest of us could struggle, as even 50 looks a tough target at present.

Of course, another way of hitting the high spots is with a high-priced winner or two. Now that Banger has sadly decided to no longer take part, I'm afraid the burden of picking long-shots has fallen squarely on Michael's shoulders, nor did he disappoint, coming up with 18/1 shot D'Argent in January. Only three others have managed to find a winner at more than 5/1!!!

Having been in touch with Spacedout and Old-Timer, I have volunteered to update the Tipster of the Year 2008 thread, which I will do in month-by-month updates over the next couple of days.

I'll include the monthly results as well as the TOTY cumulative totals, so if anyone does spot an error, just let me know.

As there is 10 months to catch up on, I'll only be doing the main scores, not the strike rate information, LLR/LWR stats and biggest odds winners. Although with the latter, I do recall 33/1, 25/1, 18/1 and 16/1 being recorded by a few of us. So well done us!!

Tuppeneycat had an excellent month, not only scooping the bonus, but soaring to the head of the TOTY scoreboard. Everyone else had a steady month without actually managing to stay in profit. Everyone that is except BlackCat, who managed to achieve the lowest month’s score for the whole year. This propelled him into bottom spot.

Spacedout took no further part in the competition, except in the small matter of looking after all the scores!!

We lost a few players in May, including Pat, Was and Whisper. Atticus also had a month off, but returned in July.

Michael had a superb May, and regained top spot in the TOTY table. BlackCat managed to sneak the runner-up bonus by £3, while Old-Timer managed the third worst monthly total for the year to re-gain bottom spot.

Only the famous five were left to battle out June, as we lost Jed and Atticus was still away.

BlackCat managed to top the month with an unremarkable score. However, no one else was able to take advantage of the bonus points. Michael stumbled, allowing Tuppenycat to regain top spot at the half way stage.

If April saw BC with the lowest monthly tally, then he made up for that in July with the highest monthly score. By his own admission, “a victory for luck over skill and expertise”, fluking some big priced winners when adrift at the foot of the table. This was particularly hard luck on Michael, who’s second place score was also the fourth highest monthly score in 2008. Ginger stayed on to pip TC for the third spot bonus points.

Michael was at his best again in August, winning the month in style and regaining top TOTY spot, albeit narrowly. TC claimed the runner-up bonus and BC the third place bonus.

Unfortunately, the stay’s of Ectoo and Les were all too brief, but Johnd remained, and he’d have been glad he did too!!

Johnd produced the second biggest monthly tally of the year to claim the month and the bonus points. As in August, TC was runner-up and BC pinched the third spot bonus.

Michael stumbled to give the cats a few lengths, and Old-Timer produced the years second lowest score.

The cats fought out a dreary November battle, with BC edging it, ahead of TC. Michael again stumbled. However, there was a story happening:

Despite their very different selections, Atticus and Ginger have been neck-and-neck all year with Atticus just keeping his nose in front. This changed in November, as Ginger picked his moment to make smooth headway and move past with just one month to go...

He left it to the last day of the month to get into profit, but BC again claimed the bonus points with a very modest looking score, which maintained top spot for 2008.

Tuppeneycat did enough to hold onto second spot in the TOTY table.

Michael – who again stumbled a little - kept third spot, just keeping the fast-finishing Ginger out of the medals.

Ginger himself just pipped Johnd, consolidating his move past Atticus.

Old-Timer triumphantly held the wood spoon aloft, for both month and TOTY.
